Wed. August 13 Middleburg, Netherlads

Beautiful, partly cloudy, breezy day, great for cycling. We slept in until 7 am and left Brugge and the enchanting streets. We headed northeast towards Zealand and the goal was to get to Breskens where we would take the ferry across. We ate our pastries and fruit and bought the most expensive map ($16) that would last us for the next four hours of riding at the info centre. We met again with our camping neighbours and wished each other a great trip. Oh, but something unexplainable happened to us, twice in that town. We checked our map and follow the bicycle route and crossed the town, but we end up in the opposite direction. So,  we went back to where we started, taking a different path and enjoying the other side of the town. We started again, but this time one street over walking with our bikes and in the entire route there was and opened street market. We asked directions and it seemed we were alright. To our surprise, we again, ended up at the same spot at the opposite direction. We could not explain to ourselves where we have taking the wrong turn. We finally made it to Breskens and took the ferry where 90% of the passengers had bicycles and the bicycle parking was awesome. Very accommodating. After 65 km at 4pm we arrived in Middleburg another charming town with canals, nice sailing boats, bike paths and very helpful and friendly people. We did not have a camping reservation and we were looking for a map. I asked for a map and some directions and found us a nice hotel instead. Right across the street from where Al was looking pensive on the side of the canal. We bought a SIM card and called my mom in Antigua and answered a few emails. We also toured the town and had a big pot of mussels and mustard soup that is not as good as it sounds in fact it was, dagsoep, soup of the day.

  2. Nice to hear that things are going well. Funny how you can take two different routes and still not be where you expected to be. We are thinking of traveling in your direction in early October. I'll call one of your numbers and see if you can predict where you might be. All the best.
